Recreating a nostalgic moment for gamers

Ogilvy PR has worked with Xbox on everything from brand marketing, technology PR and digital content creation to issues and crisis management. Initially hired to focus on Australia and New Zealand, our remit has since been extended across Asia.

To mark the launch of Age of Empires IV, we helped Xbox recreate a pivotal, nostalgic moment for many gamers – receiving a free copy of the game in Kellogg’s cereal boxes in the early 2000s. For many this marked their introduction to the franchise.

We tapped into this nostalgia and developed a limited-edition Age of Empires cereal, WOLOL-O’s. Ten lucky fans got their hands on the cereal, received a 12-month subscription to Xbox Game Pass for PC to play Age of Empires IV on launch date, and a CD with the Age of Empires II original soundtrack.

As well as bringing back memories of what kickstarted some gamers’ love of real-time strategy games, we secured positive coverage across several key gaming outlets including Press Start, Stevivor, AusGamers and Gamespot (US).

Within hours, the organic Twitter impressions sat at +330% above the projected platform benchmark and the Facebook reach was sitting at 26,000.
